Libertarian James Carr said Friday that he had received word from the Virginia State Board of Elections that he has qualified for the ballot in the 7th District.

Carr, who will take on Republican Dave Brat and Democrat Jack Trammell, is a Sandston native who worked his way through the College of William and Mary.

On his campaign website, Carr offers himself as an alternative.

“Why should you have to accept socially intolerant ideas in order to vote for someone that meets your own fiscally conservative stance? On the other side, do you have to accept a tax-and-spend approach to financial management in order to support social freedoms?”

He noted that the summer after graduation, he moved to Charlottesville to pursue an opportunity with a rock band. He said he created a merchandising plan and was the band’s road manager for a few years.

He jokes: “Did you know that bands have a tendency to break up due to personality differences?”

Now a financial analyst in the health care field, Carr also has worked as a cost analyst for a defense contractor.
