A $500,000 gift from Dominion Resources Inc. to the American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar brings its fundraising campaign to $7.2 million, closing in on the $8 million goal for new exhibits and a new building beside the James River.

Bob Blue, Dominion's senior vice president for law, public policy and the environment and a board member of the American Civil War Center, said the check would be presented today at a meeting of the board.

Supporting the campaign is important for Dominion, which has some offices on Tredegar Street, "first because we're neighbors," he said. Two other corporate neighbors, NewMarket Corp. and MeadWestvaco, contributed $2 million and $500,000, respectively.

Dominion has backed city efforts to refocus on the riverfront, Blue said. It is a sponsor of Dominion Riverrock this weekend, helped with a new footbridge to Brown's Island from Fifth Street, and is a sponsor of the Richmond Folk Festival.
