Douglas Wilder, former Governor Jerry Baliles, and former Governor and Senator Charles S. Robb.

Terry McAuliffe on Saturday became Virginia’s 72nd governor. Actually, Virginia has had more chief executives. But Virginia does not count a number of unelected acting governors and military governors.

The list of Virginia governors includes three future presidents — Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and John Tyler. It includes two fathers of presidents — John Tyler Sr. and Benjamin Harrison, the father of William Henry Harrison.

The list also includes Robert E. Lee’s father, Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee, and his nephew Fitzhugh Lee.

Govs. Patrick Henry, Monroe, William “Extra Billy” Smith and Mills E. Godwin Jr. are counted twice, because each served nonconsecutive terms.
