After endorsing an unsuccessful Democratic primary candidate in a key state Senate race, Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-7th, on Friday endorsed the nominee, Ghazala Hashmi.

On June 11, Hashmi defeated Eileen Bedell, whom Spanberger had endorsed. Hashmi will face Sen. Glen Sturtevant, R-Richmond, in November.

“I am excited to endorse Ghazala as she works hard to flip the 10th District Senate seat,” Spanberger said in a news release from the Hashmi campaign.

“Ghazala has demonstrated her commitment to our community and creating opportunity across her long career as an educator, and I know she will bring a valuable perspective to her work in the Senate. Over the last year, Ghazala has demonstrated her strength as a candidate, and I know she can win in this vital Senate seat. I look forward to working with her as she does just that.”

Both parties are gearing up for a rumble in the district, which includes parts of Richmond and Chesterfield and Powhatan counties. Sturtevant is seeking a second term. Hashmi is a community college administrator making her first run for office.
