On October 6, 2014, the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for same-sex marriage in Virginia and four other states. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued a mandate lifting the last procedural bar by saying marriage licenses could be obtained. Impromptu weddings were held at a number of courthouses around the state.
