LIPOWICZ, Dr. Peter "Pete" John, departed this life on the morning of August 1, 2018. Son, brother, friend, husband, father and grandfather (Dziadek), Peter was loved and adored by his family and friends. His sharp wit and humor were contagious, and he is remembered fondly as being the guy who could make you cry from laughing. His charm won the heart of his wife, Rachel, his partner and great love of his life, whom he met on July 21, 1981, in University City, Mo. Their marriage took them from the Midwest to the West Coast, the Southwest, and finally home to Virginia, where they settled with their daughters in Midlothian. Peter filled the home with joy, fun and goofy dad antics. The son of Polish immigrants, Peter grew up in Evanston, Ill., with his three siblings. He spent many days walking by Lake Michigan, enjoying Chicago hot dogs, and spending time with his best friend, Chuck Bohm. Peter was an accomplished scientist and inventor - a whirlwind of creativity and ingenuity. He earned his doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of California Berkeley and held over 25 patents within his career in science. His research was widely published and referenced in academic journals. In 2017, he was inducted into Altria's prestigious inventor circle. He was loved by his colleagues and academic partners and had many dear friends in far-flung cities around the world. Peter loved history and was a dedicated volunteer for the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia. He served as president of the Society from 2007 to 2009. He was passionate in his role as editor of The Messenger, the Society's newsletter. Many of his days were spent with his wife, Rachel, trekking through Chesterfield County's woods to document old burying grounds. His children affectionately remember their father's wild creativity and cleverness, often delivered through epic storytelling. As a dad, Peter was carefree, imaginative, and excited about life. He had a talent for putting people at ease, always with a story or joke in his back pocket. His home life was so happy. He enjoyed golfing, volleyball, soccer, poker and was an avid Carolina Hurricanes fan. He was a great companion to his Manx cat, Freddie and was an active member of the Tolkien Society. Peter is deeply missed by his loving wife, Rachel; and daughters, Hana (Paul Gates) and Nissa (Mike Whorton); and stepdaughter, Kristy (Mike Hale); three grandchildren, Miriam, Eli and Remy; his parents, Adam and Emilia Lipowicz; brother, Mark Lipowicz (Ruth Friedlander); sisters, Alice Lipowicz (Paul Rosenberg) and Cathy Sinturel; his mother-in-law, Jeanne Baker; sisters-in-law, Dee Meyer and Jenny Owen; brother-in-law, Bob Baker; and his darling cat, Freddie. Peter's family will receive guests at a gathering of remembrance on Thursday, August 9, 2018, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Bliley's-Chippenham Chapel. There will be a time to share memories of Peter during this gathering. All who loved Peter are warmly invited to attend and share a memory. The family will hold private services on Friday. Burial at Bethia Community Cemetery will follow. Peter was a warm friend to all. In his memory, please make someone smile or help out someone in need. To protect our immunocompromised community, please vaccinate your families. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Brain Injury Association of Virginia or the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia.
