MASSEY, William Blair Sr., 83, of Goochland, Va., and Stuart, Fla., peacefully passed away on March 31, 2014 in Stuart. Bill was born in Richmond, Va., to the late Ann Gertrude Morgan and Evan Massey. Bill was a 1948 graduate of St. Christopher's School and received a B.S. from The McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia in 1952. He enjoyed a lifetime career at A.T. Massey Coal Company, a business eponymously launched by his grandfather in 1920. Bill loved investing, shooting pool, boating, tennis and skiing. He was also an ardent and accomplished fisherman, catching many prized marlin, sailfish and shark, both recreationally and in tournament competition. Bill delighted in being around animals such as resident ducks, foxes, deer, birds, and of course his beloved Siamese kitties. A lover of jokes and pranks, he once went as far as bringing home an anteater, pretending with his family that, "This is our new pet!" Toward his later years, Bill developed a passion for singing and, in fact, became quite the baritone, much to the delight of fellow diners at his favorite restaurants. Bill had a real zest for life, even at the end. He will be missed by all whose lives he has touched. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Starke Massey; and his ex-wife, Marge Hall Boaz. Bill is survived by his four children, William Blair Massey Jr., Anne Beverly Massey, Mark Thomas Massey, Morgan Massey Bartolini; his brother, E. Morgan Massey; his ex-wife, Marie Newcomb Massey; five grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and a large extended family. Services will be held Friday, April 11, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 12291 River Rd., Goochland. Interment will follow at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, followed by a reception at The Country Club of Virginia's James River Clubhouse. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory be made to the Massey Cancer Center at Virginia Commonwealth University, P.O. Box 843042, Richmond, Va. 23284.
