TOWELL, Richard Leigh Sr., 81, of Richmond, died on August 12, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Virginia Towell; and by his first wife, Carol Thurston Towell. He is survived by his wife, Anita Grymes Towell; his brother, John (Rose); his children, Leigh, Ellen (Howard), Eric and Sam (Sarah); and his grandchildren, Jackson, Scout, Sheldon, Daniel and Eleanor. He is also survived by Harry, Randolph and Philip Grymes. Richard received his undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia and his Master of Mathematics at the University of South Carolina. He taught mathematics for more than 50 years to generations of Richmond students, primarily at Collegiate School and St. Christopher's School. His style was marked by a gruff humor and a genuine interest in the well-being of all his students, not just their academic performance. He taught at Sevenoaks School in England on a Fulbright-Hayes Fellowship, served as an elder at River Road Presbyterian Church, and helped start the Carillon Civic Association and its annual attraction, Arts in the Park. A memorial service will be held at St. James's Episcopal Church on Saturday, August 18, 2018, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Anita and Richard Towell Centennial Collection, the art collection at St. Christopher's School, or Collegiate School.
