Kudos to Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney for intimating that he thinks the city should get more for the half-million dollars it ponies up to the Washington Redskins for the privilege of hosting the team’s training camp. He’s right.
Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor Susan Platt just got a big endorsement: Rosie O’Donnell. Might as well call off the election now and give Platt the office key.
Hoke County, N.C., suspended Caitlin Miller for playing with a gun-shaped stick and “making a shooting motion.” Miller, who was pretending to be a guard protecting her queen in a game of “King and Queen,” is 5. Law-enforcement officials confirm that the playground has been secured and the children are safe. At this time, authorities say they have no evidence that would point to a broader plot, and they believe Miller was acting alone. ISIS has not yet claimed responsibility for the incident.
Our new favorite baby name is Elise Minh Khanh. It belongs to the daughter of Kathy Tran, who is running to unseat Republican Dave Albo in the House of Delegates. Tran explains that “Elise” refers to Ellis Island, where her husband’s Jewish ancestors arrived on these shores. “Minh Khanh” means “bright bell” and is a reference to the Liberty Bell. “Her name means to us, ‘Ring the bells of liberty and champion opportunity for all,’” Tran — the daughter of Vietnamese refugees — told The Huffington Post.
A child of Vietnamese-Jewish heritage named after Ellis Island and the Liberty Bell might be just about the most American thing we’ve ever heard of. Excuse us for a minute while we go wave the Stars and Stripes.
