Everyone on the planet has the right to the nutrition necessary to live life to his or her full potential. Since its founding in 1998, Rise Against Hunger, an international hunger relief organization, has grown exponentially — and the ways in which the organization seeks to end hunger continue to evolve. From the implementation of sustainable community development projects to the organization’s meal packaging program that harnesses the passion of local volunteers, Rise Against Hunger strives to make a global impact on hunger by building resilience, self-sufficiency and empowerment among communities, worldwide.
Around the world, just over 815 million people lack adequate food. One in nine people go to bed hungry each night. These facts drive Rise Against Hunger’s work to implement immediate and long-term solutions to ending hunger worldwide. With program locations in 20 U.S. cities and five international offices, Rise Against Hunger has engaged volunteers to package more than 374 million nutrient-rich meals for distribution to 74 countries around the globe.
In 2015, the United Nations recognized that the end of hunger is possible. Out of the 17 sustainable development goals, goal 2 targets the end of hunger and equal access to nutritious food by all people. This further enforced Rise Against Hunger’s mission of ending hunger and actually put a date to the end — 2030. Rise Against Hunger aims to show the world that it is, in fact, possible to end hunger by the year 2030 by mobilizing the necessary resources and will to do so.
How can you help end hunger? Rise Against Hunger aims to create hunger champions, across the world, to grow the hunger movement. Advocacy is interwoven into every part of the movement at Rise Against Hunger, and is a vital activity in which volunteers can actively engage. Rise Against Hunger defines advocacy as engaging and empowering people toward changing laws, policies, systems and attitudes to help support ending hunger by 2030.

1. Host a meal packaging event
Rise Against Hunger meal packaging events are volunteer-based programs that coordinate the streamlined packaging of highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprised of rice, soy, vegetables and 23 essential vitamins and minerals. Open to all ages, the events provide a fun, hands-on impact to help show the world that it is possible to end hunger in our lifetime.

Volunteers are one of the essential resources Rise Against Hunger needs to help realize the vision of a world without hunger. Each year, hundreds of thousands of volunteers join Rise Against Hunger not only to package meals, but to support warehouse operations and assist with administrative duties.
