The University of Richmond football program accepted a notable challenge. The Spiders will visit Michigan State in 2023, UR announced Tuesday.

The Spiders played at Big Ten member Maryland in 2015. Prior to that meeting with a regional neighbor that was new to the conference, Richmond hadn’t met a Big Ten member since losing 7-6 at Wisconsin in 1978. The Spiders-Badgers meeting occurred before UR shifted to Division I-AA, which became the FCS.

Richmond will play at Boston College next season, at Pittsburgh in 2020, at Virginia Tech in 2021, at Virginia in 2022, at Michigan State in 2023 and at Virginia in 2024.

“I would like to play [a FBS opponent] every year, no question. I think it helps in a lot of different ways, from recruiting, to budget, to the experience for your players to go play those games,” said Richmond coach Russ Huesman.

In 2017, the Spiders did not play an FBS team for the first time since 2003.
