After leading VCU to a second Atlantic 10 baseball regular-season title, Rams coach Shawn Stiffler was named the league’s coach of the year on Tuesday.
Stiffler was one of nine Rams honored as the A-10 released its annual major awards. Four Richmond players were honored.
VCU landed junior second baseman Paul Witt, sophomore designated hitter Liam Hibbits and junior right-handed starter Connor Gillispie on the all-conference first team. The Spiders’ Tyler Plantier, a senior third baseman, and Anthony Forte, a junior outfielder, made the first team, too.
On the second team, VCU had senior shortstop Zac Ching, junior third baseman Brett Norwood and senior right-handed reliever Benjamin Dum. Senior catcher Kyle Schmidt made the second team for Richmond.
A pair of VCU right-handed relievers made the all-rookie team in Evan Chenier and Danny Watson. Richmond outfielder Johnny Hipsman was named to the all-rookie team as well.
George Washington junior shortstop Nate Fassnacht was named player of the year, and Fordham sophomore right-handeded starter John Stankiewicz was named pitcher of the year.
GW utility player Noah Levin and La Salle catcher Tatem Levins were named co-rookies of the year.
This year’s A-10 tournament, hosted by Fordham, begins on Wednesday morning. Fifth-seeded Richmond (27-23-1, 13-8 A-10) will play No. 4 seed Fordham (34-22, 15-9) at 5 p.m. VCU (39-17, 19-5), which has a bye as the top seed, will play the winner of that game at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
