There are plenty of intriguing names for Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock to consider as he looks for a new men's basketball coach.

Babcock needs to find a replacement for Williams, who stepped down Wednesday to take the reins at Texas A&M.

Perhaps Babcock will hire someone who is currently a head coach in a major basketball conference (including the Big East, the American Athletic Conference and the Power Five leagues). Babcock has turned to those leagues for some other key hires since becoming Tech's athletic director in 2014, including the hiring of Williams from Big East member Marquette; football coach Justin Fuente from American Athletic Conference member Memphis; and baseball coach John Szefc from Big Ten member Maryland.

Or maybe Babcock will turn to the mid-major ranks, as he did when he hired women's basketball coach Kenny Brooks from James Madison.

This is purely conjecture, but here is a list of 10 potential coaching candidates from major conferences and 10 possible contenders from mid-major conferences. Perhaps Babcock has vetted some of them in preparing for his next hire.
