Patrick Henry’s Will Strong and Broad Run’s Jonathan Truba engaged in a three-day pitchers’ duel. But after a seven-inning game interrupted for more than a day of adverse weather, Strong emerged victorious with a 1-0 win over the Spartans on Wednesday at the University of Richmond’s Pitt Field.
The Patriots (15-6) will next host George C. Marshall – the team that eliminated them last year – in the Region 5A North semifinals.
Strong won the game in dramatic fashion, with Truba in scoring position, two outs, and pinch-hitter Andres Ravelo at the plate. Ravelo worked to a full count, but Strong got him to swing and miss on a fastball for the final out.
“Toward the last inning, once the guy got on second, I was like, ‘Oh, a base hit could tie it here,’ ” Strong said.
But he was not overly burdened by doubt.
“I was confident in my defense and the way I was throwing the entire game,” Strong said. “I was just trying to throw strikes, to hit my spots … but that last one, I got it by (Ravelo).”
The two pitchers combined allowed for an average of a hit an inning – four given up by Strong, three by Truba.
But an errant pitch in the fourth inning allowed the game’s only run. Chesdin Harrington opened the fourth inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch by Truba.
“It was a terrific ballgame,” Broad Run head coach Pat Cassidy said. “I’m disappointed for our kids that we couldn’t scratch a run across, but Patrick Henry played a terrific game and I think our kids played a heck of a game. It’s a tough way to end the season, but I’m proud of our kids effort.”
Patrick Henry coach Sam Hart was happy to see his team get the win, but he had reservations about the Patriots’ second straight 1-0 victory.
“It makes you old fast,” Hart said.
