Collegiate’s Robbie Beran works the ball around Trinity’s Kendrick Robinson. Beran, who is committed to Northwestern, scored 35 points to lead the Cougars past the fifth-ranked Titans.

Mindfulness coach Alex Peavey paid a visit to the Collegiate boys basketball team last week.

That was timely for Robbie Beran.

Beran said he was thinking about the message from Peavey, the former boys basketball coach at Collegiate, as he kept going to the foul line against Trinity Episcopal on Friday.

Beran shot 25 free throws. He made 21 and scored 35 points as the Cougars knocked off then No. 5 Trinity 62-60, ending the Titans’ 39-game winning streak (regular season and tournament) in the Prep League.

“It was just kind of get up there and relax, kind of go through my same routine, set my shoulders, relax,” he said. “It was kind of self-meditation.”
