Norview's Brianna Brickhouse (L) grapples with Springers' Jalen Gathers during game action at Glen Allen High School on Friday, March 2, 2018.

Highland Springs guards Sydney Boone and Lucy Bassett are kind of like the Springers as a team: getting to know each other.

Boone, a sophomore, and Bassett, a freshman, played against each other in middle school and AAU. They haven’t played together until this year.

Their chemistry at the top of No. 6 Highland Springs’ half-court traps and full-court pressure worked well in a 54-25 victory over Steward on Wednesday in the first round at Highland Springs.

The Springers forced 28 turnovers. While they didn’t shoot well, the pressure was too much for Steward (4-1).

Boone scored 11 of her 17 points in the third quarter, several of which came when she and Bassett worked the steal-and-layup game.

“She brings a lot of energy, and it goes out to everybody,” Boone said of Bassett. “She plays so hard, it makes everybody else play hard around her.”

With injuries to a couple of starters, Bassett moved into the starting lineup in the third game. Highland Springs started two freshman, two sophomores and senior Jalen Gathers, with several other sophomores seeing time.

“We’re still trying to figure each other out and get comfortable with each other,” Springers coach Franklin Harris said.

Steward started four sophomores and an eighth-grader. Sherese Pittman, a 6-foot-2 sophomore and Division I recruit, had 13 points and set up several teammates with passes out of the middle. Several of the Springers play with Pittman in AAU.

“We just wanted to slow her down,” Harris said.

STEWARD (4-1) — Sherese Pittman 13, Mimi Traynham 6, Saara Qureshi 2, Gates Fox 4. Totals: 10 9-5 25.

HIGHLAND SPRINGS (4-1) — Sydney Boone 17, Kiaa Boyd 11, Jalen Gathers 6, Nailah Williams 4, India Dailey 2, Lucy Bassett 6, Dream Muhammed 6, Kimaya Williams 2. Totals: 21 9-18 54.
