Trinity's Kristy Hamze during semifinal action in the TDIT Tournament at Hanover High School, Thursday, December 19, 2018

Trinity Episcopal, ranked No. 1 in the T-D Top 10 and the TDIT defending champion, is big and experienced, but had to rally in the second half to overcome Cosby, ranked No. 2 and the reigning Class 6 state champion, in a scintillating, high-level matchup, 76-64.

The Trinity Titans meet the Monacan Chiefs in Friday’s championship game, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Hanover High.

Cosby’s game plan was to contain Trinity Episcopal’s All-Metro post player Elaina Chapman. Chapman didn’t let it happen.

She scored 32 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, nine on the offensive end. She received help from Cosby transfer Kristy Hamze, who scored 14 of her 23 points in the second half.

Cosby, led by Nia Covington (28 points) and Bailey Williams (20), held a 39-32 lead at halftime after shooting 52 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point land. Marissa Gallagher also scored in double figures with 11, 9 on 3-pointers.

Trinity caught up and went ahead at the end of the third quarter on Hamze’s two free throws and buzzer-beating drive to the basket. Trinity didn’t give up the lead again.

“We had to keep pushing through the contact. We had to keep our heads up and just like keep our spirits high and not get down,” Chapman said.

The difference? “We just came out and played as a team more. We trusted each other more and we trusted that we each would get a basket when we needed to,” she added.

Trinity coach Adam Lonon said he didn’t think the Titans executed in the first half.

“We were getting the shots we wanted and the spots we wanted,” he said. “Defensively we were kind of out of position, but the difference between the first half and the second half was that we executed in the second half. Angel [Burgos] made some great buckets, Kristy had a stellar half. Elaina always gives us, in terms of the boards and on defense, her all.”
