Maggie Walker’s Mary Caroline Heinen crosses the finish line during the MileStat.com Cross Country Invitational at Pole Green Park on Saturday Oct. 14, 2017.

Maggie Walker GS junior Mary Caroline Heinen was named the state cross country runner of the year by Gatorade. She had the best time among any girl in the state, 17:42. And she won the Class 2 state meet, finishing 26 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

At the Foot Locker South Regional championships, she finished 35th.

Heinen is the co-founder of an organization at Maggie Walker that collects and donates old running shoes to those in need. She volunteers with the Little Sisters of the Poor and Retreat Doctors' Hospital. She has 4.47 GPA.

Heinen has been named All-Metro runner of the year in cross country each of the past two seasons, and she was selected for scholar-athlete of the month in December. She's the first Maggie Walker student to be chosen for Gatorade's cross country runner of the year award.
