Nigel Williams

Collegiate, Quarterback, Senior, 6-1, 185

Williams averaged 174 passing yards per game last year, and he's a threat with his legs, too. He's expected to play defensive back in college, and he has an offer from UCLA among others.

Collegiate outdueled rival St. Christopher’s on Saturday, earning a 35-21 victory over the visiting Saints.

The Cougars’ defense shut out the Saints in the second half. Collegiate’s Charles Armstrong was the offensive difference-maker, rushing for a game-high 229 yards.

“We set a high goal for ourselves this week, and we were able to accomplish it,” Armstrong said. “We wanted to run the ball right at them, and that’s exactly what we did.”

The first half was a scoring frenzy. Collegiate (4-5) struck first after a Saints turnover, capping the drive with a short Armstrong run.

St. Christopher’s (5-4) responded immediately, as Hayden Forrest returned the ensuing kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown.

Early in the second quarter, Cougars quarterback Nigel Williams hit receiver Trey Boll on a swing pass for a big gain on fourth down. Williams finished the drive with a touchdown pass to KJ Rodgers to reclaim the lead.

Later in the quarter, Williams gave the Cougars a two-score lead, taking the ball in himself from just inside the 10-yard line. The Cougars then attempted an onside kick, but it was recovered by St. Christopher’s at midfield.

Saints quarterback Patrick Routsis took advantage of the field position. He quickly led his team down the field and found receiver Walker Wallace for a 12-yard touchdown, closing the deficit to 21-14.

Routsis, who finished with 298 yards passing, led the Saints back down the field on their next drive. Routsis capped it off with a screen pass to Will Hayes, who took it 35 yards for the touchdown. The Saints converted on the 2-point conversion to tie it at 21.

In the second half, Collegiate coach Mark Palyo committed more to the run game and was able to wear down the Saints defense.

A 46-yard Armstrong run gave the Cougars a first-and-goal situation to start the fourth quarter. A few plays later, Armstrong punched it in from 5 yards out to make it 28-21.

St. Christopher’s had an opportunity to again tie the game but could not convert on fourth-and-goal when Owen Riddle sacked Routsis, giving the ball back to his offense midway through the fourth quarter.

The Cougars looked to Armstrong to close the game out and he delivered. With less than four minutes remaining, he broke through the line of scrimmage and rumbled for a 50-yard gain inside the red zone.

“I made one cut at the line of scrimmage and took off to open field.” Armstrong said. He finished the drive one play later with an 11-yard touchdown run.

The Cougars closed their season with their fourth win. The Saints will continue their season next week with a playoff game.
