Waleed Suliman

Waleed Suliman of Ole Miss is the top freshman in the country in the 800-meter run.

University of Mississippi runner Waleed Suliman posted the fifth best time in the NCAA and the best by a freshman in the 800-meter run Saturday.

At the Joe Walker Invite in Oxford, Miss., the Douglas Freeman High School graduate ran a time of 1:47.29, which was less than a second slower than the nation's top time, set earlier this month by Texas Tech junior Vincent Crisp at 1:46.31.

Suliman's time was the sixth best recorded by an Ole Miss runner. During the indoor season, he was named to the all-freshman SEC team in the 800.

A Jordan native, Suliman came to the United States in 2014. He set Richmond-area records during his high school career, won 10 state championships and was named Times-Dispatch male athlete of the year his junior and senior seasons.
