Harrison Rice - St. Christopher's

St. Christopher’s senior pole vaulter Harrison Rice

A year after claiming indoor and outdoor VISAA state pole vault titles, St. Christopher’s senior Harrison Rice is back for more.

His defense of those championships began Saturday. First, he cleared 14 feet, 6 inches to win the event at the St. Christopher’s Indoor Meet. No other vaulter surpassed 12 feet. Then Rice upped himself and topped 15-3.

The pole vault victory was part of a dominating day for the Saints, who topped the boys field with a team score of 137. L.C. Bird was second with 98, and New Kent rounded out the top three with 83.

On the girls side, St. Catherine’s won 11 of the day’s 15 events and finished with 186 team points, far ahead of L.C. Bird in second place with 82.

Rice, who verbally committed to Virginia Tech two weeks ago, bailed out of his first attempt at 15-3 but made his second try. He then had three missed attempts at 16 feet, which would have been an indoor personal record and top his school indoor record of 15-9, which he set as a junior.

“Regularly, I would be OK with 15-3, but I was practicing so much over the summer that it’s at the point I was expecting 16 feet, though I was doing a shorter run today,” said Rice. “I was really confident I could make it.”

His third attempt at 16 feet was arguably his best, but he failed to get his chest far enough away from the bar once he was over and pushing the pole away. Still, it’s a promising start to the year.

“My technique just wasn’t where it should be, and it showed with the heights,” said Rice. “I needed some practice, but it’s good to show I can compete.”

Elsewhere for the St. Christopher’s boys, junior Frank Royal won the long jump (22-7.5), junior Elby Omohundro took first in the triple jump (44-4) and senior Christian Sherod won the high jump (6-0).

The team of Neal Dhar, Christian Johnson, Ian Smith and Henry Valentine also won the 4x800 relay in 8 minutes, 38.04 seconds.

L.C. Bird enjoyed wins from Aaron Lewis (300 meters, 55-meter hurdles) and Jacob Plummer (3,200), while also taking the top three spots in the 1,000 meters with Jeremiah Hill, Shahmique Cromwell and Josiah Hill.

St. Catherine’s sophomore Jailah Channer helped the girls’ effort with first-place finishes in the 300 meters (44.83 seconds) and the high jump (5-0).

In the four events not won by St. Catherine’s, L’Nya Carpenter won the long jump (17-7.5) and triple jump (36-11) for L.C. Bird, Kylah Gray of Thomas Dale won the shot put (29-4.75), and Takeah Wallace of L.C. Bird won the 55-meter dash (7.71 seconds).
