Petersburg High School athletic director Bill Lawson III underwent a kidney transplant in 2018. On Saturday, Lawson, Petersburg’s former boys basketball coach, will host an all-star basketball game with proceeds benefitting the American Kidney Fund.




Bill Lawson III coached Petersburg’s boys basketball team for nine seasons, compiling a 189-58 record. The team reached the VHSL state championship game in 2009.

According to the most recent data collected by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), the Richmond-based nonprofit that services the nation’s transplant system under a contract with the federal government, there are 113,398 people on the transplant waiting list in the United States. Of those 94,823 are waiting for kidneys.
