The high school seniors recognized here were nominated by area schools for excellence on the playing field and in the classroom.

From the athletes listed below and the monthly Scholar-Athlete winners who were seniors, 10 girls and 10 boys were chosen to receive college scholarships. Scholarship money totaling $70,000 will be awarded Monday at the Scholar-Athlete banquet at the Jefferson Hotel.

The top boy and girl will receive $7,500 each. Two runners-up will receive $5,000 apiece. The remaining eight boys and eight girls will receive $2,500 scholarships.

The winners and runners-up will be announced at the 7 p.m. banquet that will feature a conversation with 2009 female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Kristin Carpenter Steadman who was just named Hanover High’s greatest athlete in a Times-Dispatch series.

Sports Backers will present two $2,500 need based memorial scholarships: the Cheryl L. Oliver to Jadah Ellison-Johnson of J.R. Tucker High and the Raymond D. Patterson to Corvell Poag of Armstrong High.

The finalists are denoted by asterisks.

HCAVa Sports Medicine will present its comeback athlete of the year awards to Elexis Edwards of Monacan and Jacob Stamm of Cosby. Williams Mullen will present the first Community Impact Award.
