Wrestler spotlight: Noah Roulo, Matoaca

Noah Roulo is looking to end his senior campaign with a bang after adding another region title to his résumé last weekend.

“It felt good,” Roulo said. “After a down year during my junior season, it feels like I’m back on track with my training and wrestling.”

Roulo kicked off the Class 5, Region B tournament with a win by fall in 1:50 over Johnathan Payne of Prince George. He followed that performance with a win by fall in 3:10 over Jose Rivera of L.C. Bird in the semifinals. To top things off, he won 18-7 over James Simon of J.R. Tucker in the championship.

“Simon was my toughest match all evening,” Roulo said. “The thing I liked best from my performance this past weekend was my ability to take matches into ‘deep water’ and take opponents to where they’ve never been.”

Even after a prosperous weekend Roulo and his coach, Daniel Clingenpeel, say Roulo still has things he can improve on moving forward.

“I’ve got to go into every match with full mental focus as if it is my last match ever,” Roulo said. “Coach has really helped with my composure during matches and becoming more physically dominant with a stronger emphasis on in-season strength training.”
