LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — Lagos Kunga scored twice in the second half to inspire Atlanta United 2’s 3-2 win over the Richmond Kickers on Saturday, ensuring the Kickers’ season ended with a whimper and 10 straight winless games.
After a scoreless first half, Kunga gave Atlanta a 1-0 lead with a weaving solo run in the 61st minute, beating Conor Shanosky, Oscar Umar and Mallan Roberts on the dribble before tucking the ball inside the right post.
Kunga doubled his tally with a goal in the 69th minute, this time taking the ball off of Umar’s foot at the top of the box before chipping it over Richmond keeper Brandon Barnes to put Atlanta up 2-0.
Devon Sandoval rounded out Atlanta’s scoring with a goal in the 76th minute, and Giuseppe Gentile scored two goals for Richmond in the 79th and 90th minutes — his only goals of the season — to give the Kickers late life.
With the loss, the Kickers (6-24-4) closed their season without wins in September or October, last tasting victory Aug. 18 with a 3-2 win over Penn FC.
This season was the last for the Kickers in the USL’s flagship league, as Richmond will transition to the third tier of American Soccer, USL League One, next season.
