Spencer Whitaker of Richmond won the Mercedes-Benz Greater Richmond Open men’s tennis championship, beating Matthew Fernandez of Richmond 7-5, 6-4 in the final at Salisbury Country Club.
Whitaker topped Saber Kadiri of Henrico 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals. Fernandez advanced by beating Kyle Parker of Henrico 6-7, 6-1, 10-4.
Chris Wallace of Richmond won the men’s 40 singles, topping Sung Kang of Richmond 6-1, 6-3 in the final.
Fernandez and Parker earned the men’s open doubles title, beating Eric Shulman (Richmond) and Tate Steinour (Midlothian) 6-4, 6-3.
The tandem of Kevin Long (Richmond) and Travis Miller (Henrico) took the men’s 40 doubles crown.
The women’s open singles division had three competitors, and Nina Sorkin (Glen Allen) won both of her matches.
Sorkin, who was All-Metro girls tennis player of the year all four years at Deep Run and now attends Virginia Tech, and Whitaker took the mixed open doubles title, beating Mason Davis Wright (Henrico) and Parker 6-3, 6-3.
